ORGANIZATION:
Each Church of Christ is separate from every other congregation or group of
churches. There is no central headquarters or governing board. The individual
churches are not subject to conventions, associations, conferences, or any other
ecclesiastical systems.
In each congregation, there is a plurality of elders or presbyters who serve as
the governing body of the local church. These men are selected by the local
church members on the basis of the qualifications set down in the New Testament.
Deacons, also selected by the local church according to the qualifications set
down in the New Testament, serve the congregation working with the members to
fulfill the mission as set forth by Christ. The elders, also called shepherds,
overseers, or bishops, serve only under the headship of Christ.
